Bread and Baguette Bags
Bakery made loaves of bread should last approximately three days in the bag (depending on the kind of bread you choose and the environment in which it is kept). Homemade bread can of course also be stored in the bag but the bread must have a thick enough crust keep the bread fresh since the crust acts as a natural barrier for the loaf. Therefore a loaf with a thin crust would dry up quicker than one with a thick crust. For baguettes bakers recommend eating within 24 hours of baking, however when kept in the bag it should last up to 48 hours.
Unsliced bread will last longer than sliced bread (once bread has been sliced, the air contact surface increases, so it dries out more quickly).
Bread can be frozen directly in the bag but the bag must be closed as tightly as possible. It works well to slice the bread before freezing, then opening up and taking out on or two slices at a time to defrost and eat!
About Dans le Sac
Dans le sac was founded in 2016 by two 20-something friends – one freelancing as a yoga teacher, photographer, artist and painter (Stéphanie); the other studying education at university and passionate about the environment, health and food/cooking (Laurie). Stéphanie was in the habit of taking a pillowcase to the corner bakery to pick up bread however when she got back home she realised that the pillowcase wasn’t the most ideal aesthetic choice!
They decided to look on the internet for a product that would be suitable in both practical and aesthetic terms, but found nothing that met their criteria. Equipped with only a sewing machine and plenty of naivety, they went to Montreal’s famous Rue Chabanel to buy fabric. They then began producing the prototype of what is now their reusable bread bag. And Dans le sac was born!
By offering consumers a sustainable and reusable product Dans le sac’s goal is to encourage people to reduce their consumption and dependence on plastic out of a concern for both the environment and their health. They believe every action counts and can even have a significant impact.
The bags are all made just outside Montreal, using US grown and woven cotton canvas.
The Dans le sac bags are machine-washable in cold water with a gentle detergent and no fabric softener, however the less the bag is washed the better. Simply shake out any crumbs and reuse. Not recommended in the dryer. A shrinkage of 10% on the height of the bag is to be expected after the first wash. The bags were designed larger in anticipation of this shrinkage.
